Golf Is Fun Tour

The Golf is Fun Tour is all about fun, inclusive and fair competition.

We strive to provide a competitive but relaxed environment for players of all ages, genders, abilities, and astrological signs.

Who is invited? Everyone! Well, almost… whiners and cheaters are not welcome. If you think everyone should have to play the tips, move along. If you habitually “forget” to post scores to GHIN, take a hike.

The Golf is Fun Tour was created and is managed by two local PGA Professionals and Barnstable High School graduates.

Jesse Schechtman has served as both President and Tournament Chairman of the Cape Cod Chapter of the New England PGA, and is currently Director of Golf for the Town of Barnstable.

Brad Sherman has been the owner of 15th Golf Club for the past ten years. 15th Golf Club is a local golf equipment liquidation company and largest sponsor of the Cape Cod, Massachusetts and Rhode Island PGA Chapters.

Much more importantly – we are just two guys who love getting a bunch of people together for a day of friendly competition on the links, because after all – GOLF IS FUN!

The Golf is Fun Tour will be referred to as “GIFT” for the remainder of this document.

Any and all are welcome, however in order to receive any strokes an amateur must have an active (and up-to-date) USGA GHIN handicap. Any amateur without a handicap (or with an outdated one) choosing to play at zero must register as part of a full team (foursome).

Golf Professionals – while this is not by any means a “Pro-Am” league, Golf Professionals are welcome and encouraged to play!

A one-time yearly dues payment of $25 is due prior to participation in your first event. These dues go a long way towards allowing us to enhance our events in a number of ways.

While entry fees may vary, the typical event will look like this:

Standard Entry Fee: $100 *greens & cart fees, team competition and contest holes

Optional Side Pools: *these are all individual competitions

Skins (birdie pool): $10 *greens & cart fees, team competition and contest holes

Quota: $10 *greens & cart fees, team competition and contest holes

Low Gross: $20 *greens & cart fees, team competition and contest holes

This means that the buy-in for a typical event is anywhere from $100 - $140, depending on which pools you enter.

The primary and preferred method of registration (both for dues and events) is via Venmo.

Venmo is owned by Paypal and is a safe and easy method of transferring funds.

Our account is: @Golfisfuntour

** We ask that one player from each team pay for the team in full and collect reimbursement from their teammates.

Players are asked to create a profile on our website: golfisfuntour.com/register

Once a player creates his/her profile and submits dues payment, that player's profile will be active on our website and available to be added to a team for any event.

Payouts for the team competition will vary from event to event based mainly on host course fees. Most often, team payouts will be in the form of golf shop credit (“chits”), redeemable at the venue where it was won. For certain other events, team payouts will be in the form of credit towards future event(s), or what we call GIFT Credit. GIFT Credit is valid towards the standard entry fee / team competition only, NOT the individual side pools. GIFT Credit is also valid towards Golf Is Fun Tour merchandise, such as hats, golf towels and tee shirts.

Payouts for the individual side pools will be determined by the number of entries.

As a rule, our goal is to pay approximately 25% of the field within each respective competition.

We typically will play whatever set of tees is between 6,200 - 6,400 yards. All men will play from these tees with the following exception:

Any male 65+ years of age, OR with a combined age & handicap index of 75+ shall move up one set of tees.

Females will play from whatever set of tees is approximately 80% - 85% of the tournament tee. This is in accordance with USGA recommendations.

The tees to be played by all players will be clearly indicated prior to each event.

It is absolutely imperative that players maintain a timely and accurate USGA GHIN handicap. This is something we are very serious about. Players found to be manipulating, and/or habitually “forgetting” to post scores, will not be welcome at future GIFT events.

Make no mistake about it – handicap manipulation is cheating.

Please remember that handicaps now update daily, so it is important to post scores as quickly as possible upon completing a round. We reserve the right to adjust any player’s handicap based on his or her performance in GIFT events. The max handicap for any player is 25.

In order to ensure a level playing field for all, all golf professionals will be assigned a GIFT handicap, which will adjust from event to event. This does not mean they will all receive strokes. Some will play at zero, while others might even be assigned a “plus” (better than zero) handicap. This handicap will be determined by recent tournament scores, both within and outside of the GIFT.

Editor’s Note: We are aware that at first glance the concept of handicapping “pros” might go against the grain. When it comes to the GIFT, we are all just golfers who will be handicapped equitably in order to produce the fairest competition possible. Anyone having issue with this, there’s the door.

Fun is the number one goal of this league, but without equity, there is no fun.

Please remember we are guests at these beautiful facilities. It is every player’s responsibility to ensure that EVERYONE has an enjoyable experience. Nobody wants 5+ hour rounds. If you are the type of person who insists on holing everything out whether it matters or not, this is not the place for you. Net double bogey is the highest score to be made on any given hole, even for those in the low gross competition.

Q: I don’t have a full team, can I still play?
A: Absolutely! We will do our best to create teams from those who sign up with less than four.

Q: I don’t have a handicap, can I still play?
A: Yes, but at zero, and you must register as part of a full team (foursome). Also, just get a handicap, seriously.

Q: Are skins individual or team?
A: Skins technically are individual, although partners cannot “squash” each other.

Q: Why does my quota not match my handicap on the scorecard?
A: Quota is played at 100% handicap, whereas the team competition is at 80%. For example, a player with a full course handicap of 10 will have a quota of 26, but will only receive 8 strokes in the 2-ball net competition. (36 minus your handicap equals your quota)

Q: Do we get preferred lies? What about divots? What about bunkers?
A: Unless specified, we will be playing the ball DOWN (no preferred lies). There may be exceptions to this along the way, but they will be clearly explained on a case by case basis.

Q: What does “Net Double Bogey” mean?
A: Simply put, if you don’t stroke on the hole, the most you can take is a double bogey. If you do get a stroke on the hole, the most you can take is a triple bogey. PLEASE pick up when you have reached net double bogey. Nobody wants to wait for you to make meaningless putt.
